Then upstairs, was all the bedrooms. Im only a salesman in a department store. I said, and its going to take a lot of money to put that house back together. She said, Well, Im going to help you all I can. And I said, But why would I fix a house I didnt own? And she said, Well, why dont we talk about that. I said, now here you are, the woman we always wondered about, asking me if Im interested in saving that house? But I was glad that I got this. And then I was able to get all my stuff out of storage and out of peoples homes where I stored them, and furnished the house and moved and lived in the whole house, took care of it. So one day, my sister Bess said to my mother and me, she said, Go pack. Theyd go in and theyd take the windows out and theyd use the windows, and they destroyed it. I just repainted. Sell the other half to Billthat was my brother and you and George, move with me to Florida. So we all thought that was a great idea. What a gorgeous home that was. And finally, we met with John Krawchuk, when he became in office. It was a mess of a mess. And I never had timesometimes Id be sleeping on the pool table there because I just couldnt leave! And it didnt take long to sell because it was a big piece of property, nice house. And that was the end of that. And Diane said, Oh, Marian has it.. And thats where I had all this wonderful carved stuff from the Eskimos that they gave me. They tear down one house and build five. Q: Yes. Burke: Right across the creek. Well. Q: Today is November 9, 2021. Christ, a good ten, twelve years. Daller: Right, we really dont discuss any of that. Would you sell me the acres in the front? I said, Gee, look at these chairs. And they said, Yes, look at them. What the woman who was caretaking her, what she had to do was constantly keep lilacs next to the bed. They even stopped you riding in the parks. Burke: What its been like for you to live here. And over the years, it became just prohibitive to try and do. The mansion was gorgeous! Burke: Well, Ill tell you, there wasnt that much in storagethe stuff that was in storage wasnt big pieces, maybe one or two. And he died young. The mayor and everybody else in the cityyou cant ride on the beach. That whole salon set there was a Victorian salon setand the couch is a camelback. And now theyre buildingI havent seen it, but Linda says its a huge house theyre building. If they brought flowers, it had to be lilacs. So I said, Oh. So that was thatI got that little story. I went to grammar school and high school here. And he come from a very, very wealthy family in Madrid. Burke: Yes. He spends time in every part of it. Daller: He did the sofa upstairs as well. I got one or two things out of it. We were only allowed so much. Burke: Okay. Is there anything, you think? Oh god, that was a gorgeous mansion. And, well, lets face it, they never had any hot water over there at all. And he asked me would I be interested in working for him out here on Staten Island. Oh, God, I worked so damn hard. Daller: Oh, yes. First thing I started with was the basement because it had four-foot of water in it. I mean, this was just a farmhouse. What a damn dream, there she was, laying in her coffin there, with her finger at me. And I said, Oh, shit. I had no idea that that was it, when I bought the house or anything. Oh, that was the ghost in Tottenville. Lets keep fighting it, because there was no way to fight. I want it now. I could never get it. And the house was like this, a big piece with two big wings. So I said, Well, Bess, if youre interested in doing it, Im interested in doing it.. Daller: Then you got rid of thatbut those are the early days. So I moved into the house here. Lets move out, youre being kicked out anyway, the house is sold. So thank you. So coming back to it was a change. But not long ago, I was talking about it. All that gorgeous porcelain, like the Flower Sellers Childrenits a big piece like that. Burn it down, put a candle in the middle of the hall. And my sister, Bess, she was married to Walter, her husband, who was in the Navy. And because of that, and especially the interior design thing, I went around, did little jobs, and did things, and because I learned so much by going to that to school there, that when I got back here, I got nice little jobs here and there. Im going to retire, Im going to go down to that big old house, restore it, fix it all up, move in it, and enjoy it. Save my house. And I thought, Oh, shit. I was down on the beach one day, I forgot what were doing. He was incurring all the expenses. And I got a big certificate for saving that. That was the mansion. And I had more bargains from Mrs. Murphy. And no ones going to be able to talk about it, and point things out, and say where it came from, or whats the history behind it. If you dont want to come dont show up. And he said since hes been here, he has nobody here. And Ed was very good at taking dents and things out of cars and he could spray paint. And as I said, I was in the military up there and we werent a big group of military, it was like a small base.
